Wajh Allah: The Face of God ; the transcendent Essence of all
things. Cf. these verses from the Quran: ‘“All thatis on
it (the earth) is transitory and there remains only the Coun-
tenance of my Lord, the Essence of Majesty and of Bounty.”

al-warid : inspiration, in the sense of spiritual perception.

zahir: external, apparent; opposite of batin, q.v. Az-Zahir:
The External, or, The Apparent, is one of the Names of
God in the Quran.

az zuhd: ascesis, asceticism envisaged as a privation of sensory
satisfactions.
