M anu-cervical technique of artificial insemination of the cow. F.l. OSTACHKO, V.A. TSCHOURKOV Research Institute of Animal Breeding of the Forest-Steppe and Polesje Region, Kharkov, Ukraine, U.S.S.R Electrographic examination of the uterus functional dynamism in the cow revealed a defensive response of the female to insemination consisting of peri- staltic contractions of the genital tract and developing of vaginal folds at the entry of the cervical canal. The recovery of cervical erection and of anti- peristaltic contractions of the genital tract can be evoked by means of a direct m assage of the cervix caudal part and vaginal mucosal folds with a hand intro- duced in the vagina., On the basis of physiological investigations performed, a manu-cervical technique of cow insemination was devised which consists of injecting sperm intracervically to a depth of 7 cm after cervical massage by means of a special polyethylene ampoule connected to a catheter. The hand introduced into the vagina must be protected by a polyethylene glove. This technique is largely used in the U.S.S.R. It is high hygienic and easily applied. It augments the fecundation by 10% as compared to insemination by means of a seringe-cathete and a vaginal mirror (P 0,001). 136
