Inspire students to learn about the workings of international trade and about how it can be a powerful and efficient tool that can build bridges and create inequalities simultaneously. Act as informed agents who can defend their stance when they hear misconceptions about trade (e.g., trade results in unemployment). Skills and Knowledge Students will draw a personal connection between poverty at the global/ regional level and that at the individual level. Students will learn about different indexes of poverty and inequality (e.g., the Gini coefficient and the Lorenz curve). Students will use statistics and data sets on international trade to substantiate and confirm their own intuitive hypotheses. Students will examine protectionist trade policies in Latin America and the use of free trade agreements.
