Fernando M. Reimers et a1. Overview In this unit, students will begin their exploration of health by starting with personal, individual health. They will interview members of their family as well as their personal physician regarding health issues. They will compile research on one health topic of interest in a fact sheet to share with peers. Students will also begin to explore some of the important linkages between different aspects of health that will be explored in greater depth in later units. ACLiVity SPH l .1 What Do You Need to Be Healthy? Students investigate what they need as individuals to be healthy. Students begin by writing a reflection in their journals about what they need to be physically healthy and emotionally healthy. Students then interview their parents or guardians to determine what those individuals believe they need to be healthy. Students use their reflections to write a list of questions re- garding their personal health to ask their pediatrician or family physician. They then interview the physician to gain more clinical knowledge of their personal needs. ACtiVity SPHl .2 Educating Others about Personal Health Students should use this list and other information to create a one—page in— formation sheet that will educate others on one topic of interest that emerged in their exploration of health. The topics that the students choose should vary widely and should range from prenatal care to exercise, nutrition, vacci— nation, medical screenings, dental health, physical health, emotional health, mental health, and so on. However, the topics should relate to personal health rather than to public health, which will be addressed later. Students should use the library and online resources to find at least five sources of information to use to develop their information sheet. The information should not be personal to the student but rather an exploration of a topic 328
