Fernando M. Reimers et a1. 4. Students will identify and articulate the methods used by change makers to bring to the forefront universal adult suffrage. 5. Students will create a voting campaign and examine its nuances. Overview This unit seeks to provide students with an understanding of suffrage. Through the cases of various suffrage movements in the United States, stu— dents will examine issues associated with prejudice and inequality and begin to understand why voting is crucial to establishing legitimacy in a function— ing democracy. The examples then extend to include different parts of the world where suffrage has been emphasized in both historical as well as more contemporary contexts. Students are familiarized with change makers in the US suffrage movements and the methods that they used. Students also ex— amine the ways that voting is being promoted in different parts of the world. The activities aim to create excitement and ownership around the students’ responsibility to vote when they come of age. (Note that this entire unit on governance is divided into three parts, with suggested activities in each part. Part three can be optional depending on how much time is left.) 230
