They learn what they call them- selves, where they are located, some of their major traditions and phi— losophies, and the history of their pursuit of environmental rights. 2. Students will become aware of governments’ and business’ perspec— tives on land use and their benefits and costs. 3. Students will understand notions of sovereignty, colonialism, ex— ploitation, and segregation. 4. Students will have an understanding of the important roles that in— digenous people play today~and not just within a historical context. 5. Students will know the power of the figures who have become sym— bols in indigenous—rights disputes. Overview In this unit, students prepare to learn about Navajo code talkers by examin— ing injustice in their own lives. They further learn about sovereignty and identity by doing research projects on other indigenous groups. Activity 6.7.1 Unfairness and Me In this activity, students will tell a three—minute—long personal story of a time when they were treated unjustly or unfairly. Students should make the nar— rative interesting and answer the following questions: —— Why do you think that you treated unfairly? — What do the concepts of fairness and justness mean to you? — How could amends be made? The story should be a personal one that touched the student in some way. 216
