Learn to describe the three branches of government in the United Kingdom and their functions, to describe common law and the lack of a written constitution (as compared to the United States), and to describe the purposes of modern monarchies. 2. Inspire in students an appreciation for governing systems very much like our own but different in key ways. 3. Act by demonstrating an understanding of the three branches of gov— ernment in the United Kingdom and of the functions of a modern monarchy through an in—depth study of UK governance and history Skills and Knowledge 1. Students will identify key points in British history, particularly those that pertain to the creation of the modern governing structure. 3. Students will describe the system of common law in the United Kingdom and compare it to the US Constitution. 4. Students will compare very similar systems and highlight the key differences in them. 5. Students will evaluate the two systems for their respective opportu— nities and challenges. 6.
