Fernando M. Reimers et al. Unit 2.4. Topic How Children Make a Difference Theme Empathy, ethical frameworks, common values, commitment to equality, innovation, creativity, the value of human po— tential, creative communication, and the use of technology Region Any/all and countries in partner school Length Six weeks (two activities and five sessions) This unit will examine how children around the world make a difference by helping others, improving their communities, and collaborating to address global needs. It will conclude with children in the school taking on a project to make a contribution to the education of other children. The project will be ofa modest scale, and it could be as simple as making a financial contribution to an existing organization that supports educa~ tion. The project could also be more complex, and students could work with their peers in the sister classroom with which they have collaborated throughout the year to find age—appropriate ways to jointly address a global challenge. Goals and Objectives 1. Learn that people, and especially children, have the ability to influ— ence others positively through their actions in a significant way and the ability to question the barriers that limit opportunities for chil- dren to exercise agency in improving the conditions in their com— munities. Identify the SDGs. 2. Inspire students to develop an appreciation for those who contrib— ute to solving important global challenges. 3. Act by analyzing various ways to improve educational opportu— nity and by evaluating their own capacity to contribute to those improvements. 7O
