Goals and Objectives

1. Learn to recognize the different ways and occasions in which people
celebrate around the world.
2. Inspire students to have joy and gratitude as a part of their lives.
3. Act by creating a holiday for someone or a group of people they
would like to celebrate, writing a thank—you card, and celebrating
that person or group in other ways.
Skills and Knowledge
1. Students will know that common holidays (e.g., New Year’s Day)
can be celebrated differently and similarly in different regions and
cultures
2. Students will be able to say common forms of greeting and celebra—
tion in different languages.
Overview

As a way to transition from the previous unit, the students learn about

citywide celebrations (e.g., family-friendly summer celebrations) that help

to build a sense of community. They may talk about the Fourth of July if

they’re in the United States (or about national holidays of their school’s

country if they aren’t) and also about how and what their own family
