Furthermore, the goal of global education is to make meaningful progress in solving pressing world prob- lems, which infuses global education with urgency and purpose. As such, the World Course is deep and rigorous, unifies disciplinary and interdisci— plinary competence as well as cross—cultural competence, makes connections between the self and others as well as between the local and the global, and supports lifelong transformative action by graduates who will pursue many different occupations. To this end, we envision the graduate of the World Course as an individual who is an expert in working in teams that cross bor— ders and that marshal deep disciplinary and interdisciplinary competence to solve problems, who has the intercultural competence to bring diverse people together for such purposes, and who has made a lifelong commit— ment to human rights. 2. How Is the World Course an Adaptive Approach to Global Citizenship Education in the Twenty—First Century? As discussed in the preceding section, we see the demands created by glo— balization as requiring specific instruction that will enable students to understand and to be prepared for globalization. Infusion approaches are insufficient because in practice, they dilute responsibility for such instruc— tion and minimize the opportunities for completeness, clarity, rigor, and adequate and sufficient progression in supporting the development of glob— al citizenship. In this respect, we disagree with the View espoused by Isaac Kandel a century ago that intercultural understanding can be fostered solely as a result of the emphasis of existing subjects on it. Consequently, if a specific curriculum is necessary to develop global knowledge, what curriculum should be taught?
