Peter Jackson: “When it came to Saruman, I wanted him to look blue, white, and icy cold. But I decided ifl changed those eyebrows, that I'd lose the Face and ruin the look. If there's an essential teature to an actor's face, then you don't mess with it! To make the eyebrows work, however, I lett traces of black hair running through the white beard so that it created a triangle on Christopher's [Lee, actor] tace: the dark eyebrows above, and the shadow ot darkness within the beard below." Ngila Dickson: “The two Wizards are the extremes of the lstari, Saruman so grand and tine and aloof, Gandalt the benevolent tramp roaming the countryside and in touch with its people. Saruman's costume draws reterence trom the Elves, in its Fabric and style It had to have an imminence power to it, and I really wanted to accentuate Christopher Lee's height, a towering character, like Orthanc. In contrast, Gandalt's Costume is very earthy and rumpled, the depth ot his power hidden behind this genial outward appearance. The Wizards have a deep con- nection to the Elves. There's a sense that the people who move in and around powerful magic understand the similar power of the Elves." THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING (2001) .
