John Landis (director): “I [said], I want ‘Cinderella,’ but make it African. It's a fantasy—we invented the kingdom and culture of Zamunda. Everyone should look wealthy, beautitul, elegant, and be a little over the top. [Deborah] created an African Ascot and Atricanized the royal court, which was inspired by the oriental design of the Brighton Pavilion in England. There were wondertul ceremonial regalia on the tuxedos, and Lisa's wedding dress at the end is very much a fairytale princess with a twenty-toot train. It was made to look like cotton candy."
