Differences in manipulation may also modify the apparent time of setting in the case of the drier mixtures, vigorous tamping causing water to flush on the upper surface at the expense of the lower part of the pat, thereby tending to increase the interval of initial set by the one method, and shortened the corresponding interval of the other. Small circles are used on the diagrams to define the initial and final periods of a test, connected by full lines representing the duration. When only the initial phase was determined a dotted line is drawn from the circle which indicates the beginning of the change.
