Early in the century it was famous for its beautiful music; Malibran, Persian¡, Lablache, Rubini, and many other bygone stars of the operatic stage regularly sang within its walls on Sundays during the opera season at Covent-garden. Latterly the chapel has been chiefly conspicuous as a rallying point for the Itoinan Catholic judges and counsel on the opening day of the Michaelmas term, when the main body of the judges attend service at Westminster Abbey. * * * The residents of Pwllheli, one of the most-popular seaside resorts on the Welsh coast, may well boast of the advantages of their town, if we may judge from the following extract from a- letter written by a London visitor: —“ This is our first visit to Pwllheli, but it will not be the last. A walk on the beach and a read on the Gimlet rock made it difficult to believe it was not May. The fuchsias, camelias, and arbutus trees in the open testify that this is not an exceptional winter here. The rhododendrons dark and white in bloom prove that this locality must be one highly favoured, and eminently suitable for all seeking a mild climate to pass the winter in. The veronicas and geraniums in bloom in the gardens facing the sea, and the other healthy trees mentioned above, point to this place becoming, when known, popular and populous all the year round. Eor families the safe beach is’ unequalled. There is an excellent church here, and it is worth the while to come all the way from London to hear a sermon by the vicar, Canon Davies.” Llandudno, with its rugged cliffs and bracing air, is still designated the Queen of Welsh wateringplaces; but in Pwllheli it- has always had a dangerous rival.
