Apkil 1, 1899. THE ESTATES GAZETTE, 532 ®bt ®states ®a?ette A JOURNAL Devoted to Land, House Property and Agriculture. The Oldest Paper* Published in the Landed Interests. LONDON, APRTL 1, 1899. THE EASY-GOING ENGLISHMAN. There have this week been two exceedingly instructive passages in the “Standard.” On Monday, its agricultural correspondent stated that foreign eggs were being imported into this country at the rate of nineteen for a shilling ; but that English farmers could not make egg-producing pay at so low a raie. So most of us would have thought; but in these matters of foreign competition one’s education is never complete. The statement is capped by a reader who tells of his own experience of what has been happening at Tiverton and other markets in the West of England during the last two or three weeks. In that part of the country fresh eggs have been selling, not at the rate of nineteen, but at the rate of something like twenty-four a shilling—sixpence and sevenpence a dozen. And the marvellous thing is that “ farmers do not seem to be much displeased at the price.” That is, indeed, thankfulness for small mercies. But think of the irony of the thing! Stale and doubtful foreign eggs at nineteen a shilling, when new and excellent English ones can be got even cheaper ! Of course these are not the kind of prices that are paid in the big towns. What shall be said of the easy-going supineness of a people which puts up complacently with such a state of things as this ? For food to be dear is, always has been, and always will be, a calamity; but it is perfectly clear that a fresh egg is worth more than a halfpenny, and that it certainly does not pay anybody to produce them at that price. And of course there are worse calamities even than dear food. It is far worse for instance, to have our industries ruined and our agriculture elbowed out by foreign competition, which is given its chance by our terrible national longing for the cheap. Yet we continue to allow ourselves to be fed with foreign eggs and other produce from beyond the seas, without any very articulate murmuring, at all events on the part of the crowd. Tha public at large continues to get its cheap provisions and is well content. But that the public is not always quite as wise as it might be, even in its economies, we see in the fact that it sometimes pays a higher price for stale foreign eggs than for fresh English ones, and it is likely enough that it is sometimes “ had ” in much the same way in regard to other articles of consumption. It is not easy to perceive the remedy for all this. We must not “ protect ” the native egg trade, or any one of the dozen other trades which depend immediately upon agriculture, by putting a duty upon what the foreigner sends us— indeed, if we did so, the result, for some time to come, would certainly be a very serious rise in the price of food, since our homegrown supplies would be insufficient to take the place of those which were being stopped from arriving from abroad. One thing, however, is clear enough and stands to reason. The more eggs and other foods which we produce ourselves, the less room there is for the goods of the foreign competitor. It is only by increasing our own production that we can put any limits upon these foreign imports. We are, no doubt, as we have said, terribly anxious Hotte.
