Business in the north-east coast coal tonnage chartering market has been almost exclusively confined, during the week under review, to fixtures for Swedish ports at from 55 kr. to 60 kr. to Gothenburg, rates which reveal a firm market for that direction. In addition, there have been arranged charters for London at from 14s. to 17s., a wide range" which is accounted for by differences in the posi- tion of loading turns. For all other directions the market has been dead idle. Differences of opinion between ship- owners and exporters as to what rates of freight should be are still very acute. Moreover, loading turns are very difficult to arrange, and coal cargoes exceedingly hard to' secure for any but home and Allied directions. At South Wales pretty much the same state of affairs pre- vails. Most of the business done is for scheduled destina- tions, the authorities intimating that there is no coal to spare- for neutrals at present. Interesting “outside” fixtures are those of a Spanish vessel for Bilbao at 70s., and of a neutral boat for Valencia at 125 pesetas (about 105s.). As in the case of the north-east coast, tonnage at South Welsh ports is in superabundant supply. Homewards, River Plate business is fairly active at sub- stantially reduced rates. At the United States, Northern Range to the United Kingdom on net form of charter is quoted at 55s., with 60s. for North France and 65s. to the Bay. Gulf loading is 5s. more, and sailing vessels are 5s. less. Cotton and coal freights are unaltered. There is a keen demand for tonnage at the Pacific ports. The Mediterranean and Bay ore ports are quiet at un- altered figures. There is an improving demand for time charter tonnage, but tonnage on offer is very small, and not much business can be done as yet.
