1316 THE COLLIERY GUARDIAN. June 28, 1918. chamber inside of which the burning fuse is hermetically closed. The smoke or gas caused by the burning fuse will have no other exit than through the water. (Two claims.) 115539. Concrete Props and Beams. E. F. Lewis and R. J. Lewis, Gilfach, Bargoed, near Cardiff.—Instead of employing wood, as usual, for timbering galleries in mines, jt has heretofore been proposed to employ framings made in several sections of reinforced concrete, and in one instance it has been proposed to employ a concrete framing comprising two props, each having the upper end curved (convex) in the lengthwise direction of the cross beam to be supported thereon, and the said cross beam provided on its underside at each end thereof with a. curved (concave) recess, i.e., curved in the lengthwise direction of the beam to correspond with and fit on the upper end of said props; and the present invention re- lates to an improved construction of concrete props and beams for forming supports for the roofs of coal mines and other mines or for the like purposes. Now, accord- ing to the present invention, the concrete props and beams or supports are constructed with a special joint (different from the joint referred to in the aforesaid known arrange- ment) at each end of the cross beam and the upper end of each prop as hereinafter described; and according to a further part of our invention we construct a special form of heel or foot for each such prop. (Six claims.) 115605. Valve Apparatus for Rock Drills. G. H. T. Rayner, Grange Farm House, Carter Knowle-road, Abbey- dale, and P. Rayner, 38, Chantrey-road, Woodseats, Sheffield.—This invention relates to valve apparatus for rock drills and the like fluid pressure operated tools of the type in which the valve is of cylindrical cup shape form and has holes in the wall for the escape and admis- sion of air. The object is the construction and arrange- ment of valve apparatus of the above-mentioned type by means of which it will be easy in the designing and construction of rock drills and like fluid pressure operated tools to determine the length of the return stroke of the piston as may be desired under certain conditions, and thus increase or decrease the number of blows per minute and the power of each blow.
