HUBEBT GREENWELL, F.S.S., Assoc.M.I.M.E. (At present on Active Service). LONDON, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1917. The London market has become somewhat easier since the frost ended. Buyers are still eager for better supplies, but very little new trade is reported. A dull, unchanged tone is reported on the Tyne and Wear, and the market position appears to have stereotyped itself in other directions. Hailway and cartage difficulties are still troubling the Lancashire and Yorkshire traders, who have been handicapped greatly in the supply of household coal. No altera- tion of note has occurred in the Midlands. The South Wales market is weak and irregular, anthracite being particularly affected by wagon shortage, and the reports from Scotland agree with those from the English coalfields. The freight market is in a stagnant condition. The difficulty of the position is increased by the inadequacy of railway transport, which is causing many enforced holidays among miners.
