The London coal trade continues brisk, but supplies are exceedingly scarce. The prompt coal markets on the Tyne and Wear have again been idle, owing to scarcity of supplies, and prices are more or less nominal. In Lancashire, household enquiries have not been exceedingly brisk, but the supply is still inadequate to meet requirements, throughout Yorkshire and Derby- shire collieries have been busy on old contracts, and are unable to accept new business owing to decreased output. At Cardiff, prices remain firm, the demand continuing to be in excess of the supply. The Scottish coal trade continues active. The Great Eastern, Great Northern, and Great Central railway companies have adopted a scheme
