The London coal trade still shows a great diminu- tion in the tonnage arriving, but a strong demand for all qualities. Public orders are overwhelmingly heavy. Prices are firm, and colliery representatives are declining further orders. Although the short tonnage supply continues to hamper business, the prompt markets of the Tyne and Wear have been fairly active during the past week ; competition for supplies has been very keen, and prices have become firmer. Forward business has been only moderate. The position throughout Lancashire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire is very similar to that of last week ; the demand is strong, but the supply is inadequate. Improved tonnage arrivals at Cardiff have had a salutary effect upon the local coal
