HUBERT GREENWELL, F.S.S., Assoc.M.I.M.E. LONDON, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1915. The London coal trade continues brisk. The colder weather has greatly stimulated the demand, but the available tonnage has considerably decreased. Happily a fairly large stock of house coal is landed at all the London depots, but the difficulty of cartage, owing to the scarcity of men, has become acute. Manufacturing coals, in addition to all qualities of house coal, are strongly in demand. There is no doubt that the tonnage situation has reached a very acute stage. Week by week the shortage of vessels is intensified, and rates have risen to abnormal figures. Coal export business is now entirely dominated by the supply of steamers.
