(Lond.), F.G.S. HUBERT GREENWELL, F.S.S., Assoc.M.I.M.E. LONDON, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 75, 7P75. The London coal trade for the past week has been very steady, with practically no “ free ” coal available. Any offers made were readily snapped up. Outward business in the freight market has been much brisker, owing chiefly to more freedom in the matter of coal export licences. The supply of tonnage, however, is still far below the demand, and this inadequacy tends to impede business on the Tyne and Wear, where the demand is good and the markets generally steady. The enquiry for Lanca- shire household sorts is now in excess of the supply, and prices are firm ail round as a consequence. There is also considerable enquiry throughout Yorkshire and Derbyshire, and here, too, prices maintain their strength. The situation at Cardiff remains as last week. Insufficiency of wagons causes local stoppages. If anything, the tonnage shortage is even more acute, and there is little current business. Prices are purely nominal. A slightly improved tone is shown in the Scottish coal trade. The average value of coal, coke and manu- factured fuel exported from the United Kingdom during September was 18s. 0 7d. per ton, as com- pared with 13s. 2-3d. in September 1914, and 14s.- O’Id. in September 1913. The value during the first nine completed months of the present year is 16s. 7-5d. per ton, as com- pared with 13s 86d. and 13s. ll’6d. respectively in the corresponding periods of 1914 and 1913. Of the total exports of coal during September, the mean value of the large coal exported was 19s. 6 8d.; through-and-through (unscreened), 15s. 4 4d.; and small coal, 16s. 7’4d. The average value of all kinds of coal exported was 17s. 8’6d., an increase of 0 3d. as compared with the previous month. Other- wise divided, it fetched the following:—Steam coal, 18s. 35d. ; gas coal, 14s. IPld. ; anthracite, 21s. 10-7d. ; household, 18s. l-02d. ; other sorts, 15s. l*2d. The average value of the coke exported was 25s. 11 *5d. per ton, and of the manufactured fuel 22s. 9-7d. per ton.
