Into each of the screw holes 12 there is screwed a substantial screwr 16, fitting the threads of the screw hole 12; the smaller end of each screw is down-turned and provided with threads 17, of a reverse pitch to the threads on the body of the screw. Each screw 16 is provided with a shoulder 18, I I ■fa I I R - v adapted to bear against the washer 13, and has a head 19, between which and the washer 13 there is mounted, upon the screw 16, a concavo-convex disc or cutter member 20. The cutter member or rotary disc 20 is provided with a rear central hub portion 21, adapted to bear upon the countersunk washer 13, there being a cutter 20 mounted on each leg 9, and of sufficient diameter to project beyond the edges of the legs, so that when power is applied to rotate the cutter head 2, the cutters will engage and abrade the wall and bottom surface of the drill hole. The following list of British Patents, which have been granted in favour of residents of Germany, Austria, or Hungary, is furnished in view of the new Patents Acts, which empower the Board of Trade to confer upon British subjects the right to manufacture under enemy patents, which right, when acquired, can be retained after the war, and is specially compiled for the Colliery Guardian by Lewis Wm. Goold, chartered patent agent, 5, Corporation- street, Birmingham. It is desirable in the first instance to obtain the latest particulars upon the Patents Register. If any patent listed has been assigned to a non-enemy proprietor, the law does not apply. 8959/13. Furnaces; roofs; walls. Furnace walls and roofs are built of magnesite bricks, with a mortar con- sisting of magnesite, lime, and water, to which has been added a large proportion of iron turn- ings or like material, which, when hot, forms a slag with the mortar or the bricks, or both, and causes the mortar to increase in volume and compensate for the shrinkage of the bricks. Veitscher Magnesitwerke Akt.-Ges., Vienna. 9324/13. Grabs. In a grab having two buckets which do not meet when in the closed position, the front ends of the buckets are suspended by links from a vertically displaceable sheave connected by links to bell crank levers pivoted to the grab frame and to the rear ends of the buckets. J. Pohlig Akt.-Ges. and P. Volkerborn, Germany (dated August 8, 1912). 9354/13. Centrifugal pumps; casings; regulating. Liquid is admitted to the impeller through a segmental opening, the area of which may be varied to regulate the pump by moving a plate over it. The pump may also be regulated by arranging a by-pass having a throttle valve, or by making part of the casing displaceable. Siemens- Schuckertwerke, Berlin (dated April 20, 1912). 9448/13. Coal cutting machines. A slotting machine of the type comprising two cutting discs driven by a shaft between them, is provided with milling cutters arranged between the discs on either side of the main shaft, revolubly mounted on shafts perpendicular to the main shaft. The gearing is protected by a close fitting casing. The shaft is driven by compressed air, and dust is blown out of the slot by air forced through the hollow shaft. A handle is grasped by the miner to prevent the machine from twisting round the shaft. A. Scharf, Germany (dated April 22, 1912) . 9499/13. Gas manufacture; producers; producer plant. In a gas producer plant for the recovery of ammonia and other by-products, the gases from two hot zones in the producer are led off separately, and treated for the recovery of the by-products. The zones of the gas producer are separated by a part to which air is admitted through conduits. The gases from the distillation zone pass to a tar extractor and saturator, and are subse- quently returned by a pipe to the gasifying zone, from which zone the gases finally leave the producer by a pipe. “ Montania ” Brennstoff- verwertung Ges., Berlin. 9670/13. Water tube boilers. Vulcan-Werke Hamburg und Stettin Akt.-Ges., Germany (dated March 29, 1913) . 9769/13. Electric switches; make-and-break switches; clock- work actuation. M. Langer, Vienna. 9864/13. Furnaces; mechanical stoking; ashes, removing. The mechanical stoker described in specification No. 22050/12 (see Colliery Guardian, April 23, 1915) is modified by arranging the rotary drum carrying the fuel feeding scoops upon an axis other than the axle of the locomotive wheels, by providing the drum with spaced grating bars, and by providing a special feeding shoot and ash box. G. de Grahl, Berlin (addition to 22050/12). *** Copies of any of the above specifications can be supplied at the price of Is. post free.
