THE COLLIERY GUARDIAN AND JOURNAL OF THE COAL AND IRON TRADES. Vol. CVIII. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1914. No. 2813. Opening of New Rescue Station in North=East Lancashire. Anew district station for training in mining rescue work, which has been recently erected in Accrington- load, Rose grove, Burnley, was opened on Thursday, November 19, by Mr. John Gerrard, F.G.S., H.M. inspector of mines for the district, in the presence of a large number of colliery owners and other gentlemen interested in mining. The station is the second of a series of three, the others being at St. Helens and Denton, erected by the Rishton Colliery, and the construction was carried out by Mr. J. Pilkington, contractor, Rainford, near St. Helens. There is a central hall for lessons and observation, surrounded on all sides by a gallery representing as nearly as possible the various conditions found in underground roadways in coal mines. When desired, this gallery can be filled with dense sulphurous fumes, to represent the unbreathable atmosphere of a mine after an explosion, and while the men are at apparatus of the latest type for the training of brigades of men from the local collieries in rescue work. Pro- vision has also been made for the housing of a motor car to facilitate the rapid carriage of men and apparatus to any point where their services are needed. The station is in charge of Sergt. G. H. Patten, an instructor from the Howe Bridge Central Training Station, who resides on the premises. The opening ceremony was presided over by Sir John Thursby, Bait., and among the gentlemen present were Messrs. R. Landless and J. E. Landless (Burnley), J. There are also cleaning rooms and store rooms where apparatus will be kept charged and ready for instant use or despatch to any colliery. The equipment has been of the most thorough character, and includes Schofield (Towneley), J. Jobling (Cliviger), G. L. Macalpine (Altham), Geo. Elce (Great Harwood), F. Whittaker (Accrington), W.
