538 THE COLLIERY GUARDIAN. September 4, 1914. telephone will take place. Of course, this will also occur if the coil b2 is placed in the proximity of a tube or pipe embedded in masonry, and therefore the place at which such pipe is situated will be indicated by the telephone. The cross section of the coils may be circular or polygonal or elliptical, or of any other suitable shape. Two claims. 28055 (1913). Improvements in Discharging Apparatus for Vertical Retorts. S. Glover, of Olivemount, St. Anns, St. Helens, Lancashire, and J. West, of Alton Lodge, Park- crescent, Southport, Lancashire.—Relates to apparatus for extracting or discharging coke from retorts employed in the distillation of coal, shale, and the like, and is particularly applicable to continuously operating coal carbonised plants in which the material to be carbonised is fed continuously to the upper end of a heated retort, through which it passes . by gravitation at a speed regulated by a mechanically- operated coke extractor or discharger fitted at the lower end of the retort. The object is to provide an improved form of extractor or discharger, which, whilst efficiently perform- ing its function, will result in a minimum of breakage of coke, and the consequent formation of “ breeze,” and also will be economical in power consumption. The invention Fip. u 'V comprises the combination with the lower end of the retort, which is arranged to effect delivery of the retort contents through the side thereof of a plate projecting from the coke or carbonised material discharge outlet to such a distance that the coke or carbonised material will rest on the plate at the angle of repose, and a substantially sector-shaped dis- placer adapted to be alternately advanced and withdrawn so as to push coke forward on to and over the edge of such plate, and then allow a further quantity to drop to the retort bottom. Fig. 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of the lower end or portion of a setting of vertical retorts, arranged in accordance with the invention; fig. 2 is a sectional eleva- tion on the line A B, and looking from left to right of fig. 1; figs. 3 and 4 are views at right angles to one another of the means for actuating the discharging device. (Tnree claims.)
