been further developed and improved by providing
plates or shutters at desired distances apart located
between the ends of the trough and the point of
discharge. Each plate is hinged on a horizontal bar
supported above the trough by vertical plates bolted to
the trough sides. Normally the plates hang in a vertical

position and extend from side to side of the trough,
while the lower edges of the plates are at a level just
above the surface of the carrier. A stop is fitted on the
inner side of the trough behind each plate, and this
prevents the movement of a plate when the carrier
advances towards the end of the trough. By means of

the plates, the conveyor partakes of the nature of a
continuous conveyor, inasmuch as the coal can be
thrown into the trough, irrespective of the position of
the carrier, with a consequent economy in labour.

gateway, the left-hand side of the trough can be filled
