Orders from the general public have been received in unprecedented numbers, and merchants are powerless to deal with them. The Coal Merchants’ Society decided not to advance public prices. All colliery quotations are withdrawn. Heavy supplies of Yorkshire coal are expected; meantime, the bulk of the merchants have good stocks on hand. Horses, trolleys and men have been commandeered by the War Office. The market at Newcastle is practically at a stand- still, shipments having entirely ceased, whilst several collieries have been closed. Admiralty business aside, the position at Cardiff has been very similar. On the other hand, the Midland collieries have received a few fresh orders for domestic sorts. The diminished output has in some places led to a
