removing their existing slag-grinding plant to another
site. The slag plant, when completed, will have a grinding
capacity of 1,500 tons per week of Bilston basic phosphate.
The new plant is entirely driven by gas engines operated
by blastfurnace gas. Another large gas engine and
dynamo, to provide the additional power required in the
works, are being erected in the new power house. The
engine is of 1,000-horse power, and its installation will give
the gas power plant at Messrs. Hickman’s w<rks a capacity
of 14,000-horse power. A briquetting plant for dealing
with fine ores is also in course of construction.

At the St. Helens Police Court, Messrs. Richard Evans
and Co., colliery proprietors, Hay dock', were proceeded
against on several summonses forbreaches of the Explosives
and Coal Mines Act. Inspector Jackson stated that he
found a quantity of explosives in the stores at the Havannah
and Southport pits, Parr, which were, according to the
regulations, above the stipulated quantity. Mr. Allen, of
Wigan, who defended, said that since the Explosives Act
was passed the whole position had completely changed.
The Home Office had been informed on the matter, and the
colliery proprietors were anxious to have the position of
affairs defined, so that they could put matters right. The
Bench imposed a fine of 20a. in one of the cases, and the
other charges were withdrawn.

Striking testimony of the work of Mr. James Elce, the
manager of the Silverwood pit of the Dalton Main Collieries
Limited, was given at a gathering of officials and workmen,
held in the Council School, Whinney Hill, on Saturday
last. Mr. Elce is relinquishing his appointment in order to
fill an important position in Russia. Quite a succession of
presentations have been made to him, those on Saturday
including acknowledgment from the Silverwood Corps of
the St. John Ambulance Brigade, of which he was
superintendent.

Mr. John Buckingham Pope, of The Albany, Piccadilly,
chairman of the Denaby and Cadeby Main Collieries
Limited, and of the South Yorkshire Junction Railway
Company, barrister-at-law, left estate of the gross value
of £367,599 12s. Id., of which the net personalty has been
sworn at £364,297 17s. 6d.

The directors of the London and North-Western Railway
Company have appointed Mr. F. T. Kinsman, chief outdoor
goods manager, to the position of chief goods manager, in
succession to Mr. C. E. Grasemann, who has retired through
ill-health.

At the Doncaster West Riding Police Court on Saturday
James Greenhall, 17, pony driver, was summoned for cruelty
to a pit pony at Manvers Main Colliery. Mr. W. Baddiley,
who prosecuted, said defendant was seen by two rope lads
kicking the pony in the body and striking it with a pick
shaft. Defendant was then seen to beat the pony about
the legs, head and body with an iron bar. The veterinary
surgeon was sent for, and found the pony suffering from
terrible wounds. It was paralysed from an injury to its
back, and on the 19th inst. it died. Mr. Yarborough,
chairman of the Bench, said it was the worst case of cruelty
that the magistrates had had before them in that court*
Defendant would be sentenced to three months’ imprison-
ment under the Borstal system.

Messrs. Rees Morgans and Thomas Waldins have been
appointed by the Home Office to be sub-inspectors of mines
in the South Wales Division.

The first session of the new school of mines founded by
the coalowners of the South Wales and Monmouthshire
coalfield for the training of all grades of colliery officials,
will commence on Monday, October 6, 1913. A three years’
day mining course of 30 hours per week, and part time
(one day per week) courses are being arranged for the
training of colliery managers, mine surveyors, mine
chemists, mine mechanics, and mine electricians. Fully
equipped chemical, electrical and engineering laboratories
will be available. For further particulars regarding
admission, fees and curriculum, application should be made
to the Principal, School of Mines, Treforest.

A local correspondent learns officially that the Hulton
Colliery Company are negotiating for a new colliery, the
Halsnead Colliery, near Rainhill, and it is expected that
the negotiations will be completed, and the lease signed,
next month. As the old places are worked out at the firm’s
Westhoughton and the Chequerbent pits the men displaced
will be transferred to the new pit, where there is coal
enough to last for 100 years.

A correspondent learns that the Clifton and Kersley Coal
Company (Pilkington Colliery Company) are about to
establish a small model colony in the vicinity of their new
pits at Astley Green, for the accommodation of their miners
and families. Local co-operative societies, too, are about to
open additional branch shops in the same neighbourhood.

The Tyldesley Coal Company Limited have erected a
new headgear at the Daisy pit, Tyldesley, where they
propose carrying out further developments.

The Rescue and Aid Station for the Cumberland
collieries is to be established at Brigham, on a site given by
Mr. Jos. Harris, of Brayton Domain Colliery. It will be
equipped with all the necessary appliances, and a smoke
gallery into which poisonous fumes can be driven, so that
the conditions under which the men are trained will
approximate as near as possible to those which might be
expected to obtain in case of explosion or fire.

COAL, IRON AND ENGINEERING COMPANIES.

Anderson and Son Limited.—Tnis private company has
been registered, with a capital of £25,000 in £1 shares, to
carry on the business of colliery proprietors, ironmasters,
steelmakers and converters, &c. First directors : G.

Avery (W. and T.) Limited.—The directors have decided
—subject to audit—to recommend the payment of a divi-
dend for the second half of their financial year ended
March 31 at the rate of 15 percent, per annum (free of tax)
on the ordinary shares, which will make the total distri-
bution 10 per cent, for the year.

Bengal Iron and Steel Company Limited.—The directors
announce that they have decided to pay the arrears of the
preference dividend for the year ended September 30, 1911,
thus leaving only one year’s arrears still to pay. It is
expected that the second battery of coke ovens will be in
operation early next year, together with the complete
sulphate of ammonia plant for both batteries. The
approximate cost returns for the first eight months of the
current financial year show an increase in profit of about
£15,000 compared with the corresponding period of the
previous year.

Bennett (George) and Co. (Sheffield) Limited.—This
private company has been registered, with a capital of
£4,000 in £1 shares, to carry on the business of steel and
iron merchants, steel makers and converters, &c., and to
acquire the business carried on at Self Hard Works, Cornish-
street, Sheffield, as George Bennett and Co. First directors,
H. C. Frost and W. F. Heslop (both permanent, subject to
holding 200 shares).

Berry (W. N.) and Co. Limited.—This private company
has been registered, with a capital of £1,000 in £1 shares
(10 deferred), to take over the business of electrical and
mechanical engineers carried on by W. N. Berry and H.

and Co., and to adopt an agreement with W. H. Edge.

Britannia Tube Company Limited.—This private com-
pany has been registered with a capital of £100,000 in £1
shares, to take over the business of tube manufacturers
carried on H. Huggins and F. Huggins at the Britannia
Tube Works, Glover-street, Birmingham, as William
Huggins and Sons. First directors, H. Huggins, F. Huggins,
and F. Wain (all permanent).

Carlton Iron Company Limited.—The report states that
the accounts for the year to April 30, after appropriating
£10,637 for interest on debenture bonds and loans and for
sundry management charges, show a credit balance of
£43,619, reducing the debit balance of profit and loss
account to £115,595. The loss on capital at the Rosedale
Mines has now been ascertained, and the directors propose
to write off the amount—£9,898—and also the final debit
connected with the East Howie Colliery—£583.

Cheetham and Hill Limited.—This private company has
been registered, with a capital of £7,000 in £1 shares, to
take over the business of an engineer, ironfounder, smith,
machinist, manufacturer of castings, iron goods and engi-
neering tools, machines and appliances, carried on by H.
Cheetham at the Sun Foundry, Derby, and elsewhere as
Cheetham and Hill. First directors, H. Cheetham (governing
director) and H. J. S. Hilton. Registered office, Sun
Foundry, City-road, Derby.

Continuous Reaction Company Limited.—This private
company has been registered, with a capital of £16,500
(30,000 shares of 10s. each and 30,000 of Is. each), to carry
on the business of concentrators, smelters, reducers, and
treaters of ores, manufacturers of electrical or other furnaces
for smelting or other purposes, &c., and to adopt an agree-
ment with W. B. Ballantine and D. C. Lee. Qualification
of first directors, who are to be appointed by the signatories,
£50. Remuneration, £150 per annum.

Dinnington Main Coal Company Limited.—The report
for the year ended March 31 states that the result of the
company’s trading for the 12 months is a gross profit of
£75,655. From this must be deducted depreciation and
interest, £17,360, leaving a net profit for the year of £58,294,
making, with £10,335 brought forward, a disposable balance
of £68,630. It is recommended that this should be appro-
priated as follows :—To write off leases and options acquired,
£12,500; to pay a dividend on 275,000 ordinary shares at
9 per cent, for the year, £24,750; to pay on account of
arrears of dividend on 261,022 ordinary shares at 6 per cent.,
£15,661; leaving to be carried forward to next year the
balance of £15,719.* Under the articles of association, the
ordinary shares are entitled to a cumulative dividend of 10
per cent, per annum in priority to the deferred shares. It
is therefore recommended that the dividend for the last
financial year be declared at 9 per cent., and the remaining
6 per cent, credited to the arrears of dividend required to
make up 10 per cent, per annum. An additional area of
843 acres of the Barnsley seam has been taken on lease, and
a further 504 acres has been arranged for, both of which will
be worked from the existing pits. The colliery plant and
workings have been maintained* in an efficient condition. A
new battery of 20 coke ovens (making 80 in all) with by-
product plant has been started since the end of the financial
year. The directors deeply regret to record the death of
Mr. Walter S. B. McLaren, M.P., who had been a director
of the company from its inception.

Doncaster Main Colliery Limited.—This private company
has been registered, with a capital of £100 in £1 shares,
to carry on the business of colliery and mine owners,
miners, &c. Qualification of first directors, who are to be
appointed, one ordinary share.

Earls Barton Iron Orel Company Limited.—This private
company has been registered, with a capital of £30,000 in
£1 shares, to carry on the business of ironmasters and
founders, colliery proprietors, coalmasters and merchants,
&c., and to adopt agreements with J. Clark, J. Richardson,

Messrs. ThurnaH, Burgess and Watson, Marguerite Hornby
and W. C. Whitworth. First directors: W. C. Fowler

annum on the preference shares for the half-year to

Glespin Coal Company3Limited.—This private company
has been registered, with a capital of £10,000 in £1 shares,
to carry on the business as coalmasters, &c. First directors :
J. Kennedy and D. M. Kennedy.

Greenwood and Batley Limited.—The directors report
for the twelve months ended March 31, 1913, that, after
providing for interest on the debentures, expenses of
management, and doubtful debts, the accounts show a
profit of £15,275. The balance at credit of profit and loss
at March 31, 1912, was £3,649, giving a total of £18,924.
The directors recommend payment of the cumulative
preference share dividend at the rate of 7 per cent, per
annum, amounting to £7,028, leaving to be carried forward
£4,396.

Hargreaves (Birmingham) Limited.—This {private com-
pany has been registered with a capital of £1,000 in £1
shares, to take over (1) as from June 1 the business of
hardening specialist and engineers’ merchant, carried on by
S. Hargreaves at 33, Essex-street, Birmingham, and (2) as
from June 9, 1913, the similar business carried on by F. J.
Kind at 71, St. John’s-road, Selly Park, Birmingham. First

Humphrey Pump Company Limited.—This company has
been registered, with a capital of £200,000 in £1 shares

S.W., and to carry on the business of manufacturers of,
contractors for and dealers in, pumping power and other

Knowles (Andrew) and Sons Limited.—The directors
have declared an interim dividend on account of the profits
of the current year of 5 per cent, per annum (4fd.) per
share, less income-tax.

Kynochs Limited.—The report for the year ended
March 29 states the net profit amounts to £126,267 10s. 8d.
To this has to be added the sum of £24,599 14s. 5d. brought
forward from last year, making a total of £150,867 5s. Id.
The interim dividend of 2| per cent, paid on the preference
shares, debenture interest, &c., paid and accrued, and
debenture stock redemption fund amount together to
£54,331 19s. 4d., and the directors’ fees will absorb £5,000.
The directors now recommend that a final dividend of 2%
per cent, be paid on the preference shares, making 5 per
cent, for the year; that a dividend of 2| per cent, be paid
on the ordinary shares (both these distributions being free
of income tax) ; that a sum of £40,000 be written off capital
expenditure and investments; and that the balance,
£29,347 15s. 9d., be carried forward to next year’s account.

Maltby Main Colliery Company Limited.—The report
for the year ended March 31 last states that the gross profit
for the year is £15,826, which, after deducting interest and
depreciation, is reduced to £6,234. It is proposed to carry
this balance forward to next year. Since the date of the
last report the development of the colliery has proceeded,
and the output has now reached an average of 1,600 tons
per day. Difficulty has been experienced in obtaining the
necessary number of men, although the building of work-
men's houses has been carried on as rapidly as possible;
382 houses have been built for and taken on lease by the
company, 33 more are in course of erection, and a contract
for a further 118 has been let, and building has been
commenced. In addition to these, 12 houses have been
built near the colliery for the accommodation of officials,
and are the property of the company. The incidence of the
Coal Mines Act and the National Insurance Act has
materially added to the cost of production. The equipment
of No. 1 shaft is practically completed, and it will be ready
for coal winding as soon as it is required. The erection of
a battery of 60 coke ovens (as the first instalment of an
ultimate 120 ovens), with by-product recovery plant, is in
progress. A coal washery has been erected, and is in
operation. A workmen’s institute has been commenced,
and provision has been made for cricket and football
grounds for the use of the company’s employees. The
directors have to record, with much regret, the death of
their colleague, Mr. Walter S. B. McLaren, M.P., who had
been a director from the inception of the company. In his
place they have elected Sir Henry Norman, M.P.

Natal Navigation Collieries and Estate Company
liimited.—Dividend of 3| per cent. (9d. per share) for the
half-year ending the 30th inst.

New Park Colliery Company Limited.—This company
has been registered, with a capital of £500 in £1 shares,
to carry on the business of coalmasters and factors, colliery
proprietors, &c. First directors: C. P. Blewitt, S. Blewitt
and W. Humphreys. Registered office, New Park Colliery,
Red Hill, Dudley, Worcs.

~Niddrie and Benhar Coal Company Limited.—The
report states that for the year ending April 30, 1913, the
gross profit, including £3,358 13s. 6d. brought forward from
last year, is £37,460 7s. lOd.; deduct debenture interest,
£3,000; depreciation, £9,918 12s.; sum written <ff Olive
Bank estate, £1,000, leaving a balance of £23,541 15s. lOd.
The directors recommend that this sum be disposed of in
payment of a dividend of 10 per cent., £20,000, leaving to
be carried to next year, £3,541 15s. lOd. Satisfactory pro-
gress is being made with driving the mines to the under-sea
coal. The whole machinery and works have been kept in a
high state of efficiency. The washery at Newcraighall is
now found to be insufficient to deal with the increased
output, and an additional installation is being erected.

Oakwood Colliery Company Limited.—This private
company has been registered, with a capital of £25,COO in
£1 shares, to take over the Oakwood Colliery, in the parish
of Michaelstone, Super Avon, Glamorgan, and to adopt an
agreement between F. S. Jones, the National Provincial
Bank of England Limited, F. E. Jacob and J. P. Jacob.
