LONDON, FRIDAY, MAY 16, 1913. ______________________ The average value of coal, coke and manufac- tured fuel exported from the United Kingdom during April was 14s. l'6d. per ton, as compared with 13s. T8d. in April 1912 and Ils. 36d. in April 1911. The value during the first four completed months of the present year is 13s. 9'8d. per ton,, as compared with 12s. 6 2d. and Ils. 4’4d. respectively in the corresponding periods of 1912-. and 1911. Of the total exports of coal during April, the mean value of the large coal exported was 15s. 5’8d. ; through-and-through (unscreened) coal, 12s. 21d.; and small coal, Ils. 9'3d. The average value of all kinds of coal exported was 13s. lT8d., an increase of 3'7d. as compared with the preceding month. Otherwise divided, it fetched the following values:-—Steam coal, 14s. 4'8d.; gas coal, 12s. 2’5d. ; anthracite, 15s. 7'4d. ; household coal, 13s. 2Td. ; and other sorts of coal, 12s. 3'5d. The value of the coke exported was 19s. 9'6d. per ton, and of the manufactured fuel 17s. 2’06d. per ton. Mr. Redmayne’s report on the Cadeby Main explosions has been issued. He considers that the first explosion was due to the existence of a fire in the neighbourhood of a fault, and he remarks that Mr. Chambers’ instructions for sealing off the fire, which he believes were not carried out, were well conceived. The explosions, he thinks, afford eloquent testimony of the value of inert dust. As to the rescue operations, the Chief Inspector forms a decided opinion that the organisation at the mine on the occasion was most defective, and he deprecates the taking of risks to bring out dead bodies. In view of the enquiry now being conducted, Mr. Redmayne expresses no opinion on the general question of spontaneous combustion in mines. Mr. J. B. Atkinson, H.M. chief inspector of mines for the Newcastle district, is resigning his post to establish a practice in Newcastle as a consulting' mining engineer. We regret to state that Mr. J.
