The Hague, March 11.—Truck Frames, <fyc.—H.M. Consul
at Rotterdam reports that tenders will be received by the

Tonnage is in plentiful supply, and rates are weaker on
the north-east coast. The volume of business done during
the week has not been great, but more activity appears
likely in the very near future. The following are typical
rates for Tyne loading:—London, 3s. 3d. to 3s. 6d. ;
Hamburg, 4s. to 4s. 3d. ; St. Nazaire, 5s. 9d. ; Norrkoping,
7s.; and Genoa, 9s. 9d. to 10s. At South Wales, chartering
has not been quite so full as usual. The market is very
weak for early loading, especially for the Italian and near
Mediterranean ports. South America is fairly steady. The
Bay and coasting trades are dull and featureless. At the
Clyde, a moderate business at about late rates is reported.
The Humber is inactive. Homewards, the amount of
chartering done is fully up to the average. The Black Sea
is steadier for early tonnage, which is somewhat scarce, and
the Azof and Danube are similarly affected. The Australian
market is poor, and the nitrate ports are dull. The East
Indies are easier and slow. America rules steady on boats
offering sparingly. The River Plate rates have fallen away
for early loading. The Mediterranean and ore trades are
moderately busy.

Presiding at the half-yearly meeting of the Cleator and
Workington Railway Company recently, Mr. J. S. Ainsworth
said they had, like other railways in Cumberland, suffered
from the fact that the coke consumed in the furnaces there was
now largely supplied from the local works, and in consequence
the traffic in the north-east of England had decreased in
proportion. On the face of it there appeared to be a loss to their
company, but it was a change in conditions upon which he
cordially congratulated the shareholders. They might, it
was true, suffer some loss in the meantime, but he hoped
that the place of the north-eastern coke would be entirely
taken by the coke produced at the local works, and that
they should have a considerable stimulus to the trade of
the district by the substitution of the local coke for
the coke hitherto brought from the east coast. They
had a considerable trade in the importation of manganese
ores from Barrow to Workington, where they were largely
used. The ore was brought there by special trains, specially
organised and representing now a considerable item of
trade to the district.
