Steam Raising- in Collieries.

There are many types of boilers raising steam in collieries, and a large number of boilers are
still hand-fired. Upon first reflection it is not apparent why hand-firing should still find favour to
the extent that it does. An acquaintance, however, with working conditions soon discovers the
reason, viz., that it is not every machine stoker that can burn successfully the kinds of fuel which
the Collieries make a point of consuming for steam-raising purposes.

Against machine-stoking in Collieries there has always been the fact that no machine can burn
the large slat s and bats and the great pieces of slaty and stony coal that are offered to them ; such
material, moreover, wrecks machine stokers. To meet cases of this kind, Edward Bennis & Co. Ltd.,
have designed their Colliery Hand-fired Furnace. This machine is a rapid steam raiser, and can
burn successfully fuel of a size that no machine can touch.

“ Bennis ” Sprinkler Stoker and self-cleaning compressed air

These links, forming as they do a continuous grate surface—that is, a surface without
spaces between them into which the coal can fall, and yet possessing well regulated air
spaces—are absolutely unique in design, and are as successful as they are unique. It is
unthinkable for any Colliery steam user, once having used the “Bennis ” Chain Grate
with the improved strong link, to return to the older form of link with its faulty and
extravagant design.
