ELSDEN, D.Sc. (Lond.), F.G.S. HUBERT GREENWELL, F.S.S., Assoc.M.I.M.E. {At present on Active Service'). LONDON, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1918. The London market still suffers from shortage of supplies. The delivery trade re-opened to-day (Friday), Business is of a piecemeal sort this week, owing to holidays. On the Tyne and Wear no coals are offered for prompt shipment, and practically nothing is obtainable for January. Neutrals are willing to pay 85s. for best steams for March loading and 75s. for gas bests. Prompt bunkers are bid for in New- castle at 70s. The other markets, including South > Wales, are almost featureless, owing to the lack of any margin of coal for ordinary trade. All the coal produced in Scotland is quickly absorbed. The freight market is quiet, and very little tonnage is offered. No early loading turns are available. Coastwise rates are weak, on the basis of 12s. North- East coast to London. Part II. (Labour) and Part III. (Output) of the Annual Report relating to coal, coke, and manu- factured fuel in 1917, have been issued by the Acting Inspector of Mines. The Inter-Allied Chartering Executive states that ; owing to congestion no more fresh charters for ; neutral vessels in the coal export trade to France and ; Italy can be effected until further orders*.
