(At present on Active Service). _________ LONDON, FRIDAY, NOVEAIBER 22, 1918. __________________________ The London coal market has suffered much from the lessened output. House coals are steadily improving, but manufacturing qualities are unusually scarce. Shortage is still the main feature of the coal markets. On the Tyne and Wear coals are not offered^ for this month’s loading, and neutrals can obtain only odd lots, mostly for January-February shipment. Bunkers are dull in the open market, but quotations are steady. Merchants report that the position of supplies in the Manchester market is better. Prices there are unchanged. The Yorkshire output of house coal is seriously inadequate, and Midland collieries report the usual excessive demand. Large coal of all sorts is short in Cardiff, Monmouth- shires are active, and bituminous is in good demand. A deficiency still prevails in Scotland. Tonnage is more plentiful than coal supplies at loading ports. In the Tyne chartering market matters have been at a deadlock—exporters and owners being apparently far from agreement as to what rates of freight should be. Vessels were offered freely in Cardiff for neutrals, especially Spain, but lack of cargoes precluded business.
