possess a 50 °/o greater margin of safety and can be worked at higher speeds than
those fitted with the old makeshift materials such as wood, leather and hemp.

These relics of an inefficient age have all the shortcomings common to makeshifts.
They are adversely affected by pressure, speed and heat, charring or failing through
changing conditions and requiring constant refitting owing to their short life.

Ferodo fabric was designed simply and solely to serve as a friction surface. Years
of experience were concentrated on producing a material not only to supersede the
makeshifts by eliminating their drawbacks, but to give a higher co-efficient of friction
which would enable engineers to raise their standard of production.
