W (Colliery (Sttiurtian AND Journal of the Coal and Iron Trades. Joint Editors— J. V. ELSDEN, D.Sc. (Lond.), F.G.S. HUBERT GREENWELL, F.S.S., Assoc.M.I.M.E. {At present on Active Service). LONDON, FRIDAY, AUGUST^ 1918. The London coal trade shows very little change. Gas coals and hard steams are wanted badly. All house coals are in strong demand, and supplies are small. Market reports this week deal with the present scarcity of fuel and the doubtful outlook. Delayed steamers caused some large supplies to be thrown on the Newcastle market, yet prices are firm. Bunkers are easily obtained for spot loading. Durham gas coal presents a growing problem, for gas companies and other important services demand supplies much beyond present quantities. Business is almost nominal in Lancashire, Yorkshire and the Midlands, as the output is practically earmarked. The position in Scotland shows no material change.
