LONDON, FRIDAY, MAY 24, 1918. __________________________ The London coal market has been practically closed all the week, but merchants and manufacturers are keenly anxious for better supplies. All prices are unchanged. Gas works are pressing for coal. The Tyne and Wear market is experiencing a strong demand, but practically all supplies are required for official and home needs, so that exports to neutrals are practically nominal. ’Sellers of best Blyth steams ask up to 50s. per ton for June-July delivery. House coal is still deficient in Lancashire, and a good enquiry is current for slack and engine fuel. Coal and tonnage alike are scarce in York- shire. The enquiry for South Yorkshire hards is a feature of the Hull market. Even very high figures failed to elicit offers of coal in Cardiff for shipment to neutrals, although tonnage there is iri good supply. Demand in Scotland still outruns supply. Anthracite large coals are in strong demand in Swansea, and machine made sorts have become scarcer owing to the holiday stoppage. Bubbly culm and duff are plentiful.
