The London coal market is well supplied with
coal, both seaborne and railborne. The depots are
fairly full of stock coal.

The market in Northumberland and Durham is
firm, and best steams and gas coals are fully taken
up. Secondary grades are plentiful, but the general
tone is good. Comparatively little new outside
business is reported. Some of the Lancashire pits
experience an increased demand for house coal for
summer stocking. Ordinary bunkering is quiet.
The comb-out is already affecting the Yorkshire
trade. A better arrival of tonnage strengthened
the demand for best qualities and bunkers in Cardiff,
but the market quotations are practically unchanged.
The strong demand in Scotland continues, and ship-
ments are well maintained.

Freight business is scanty, and quotations for
Spanish and Portuguese destinations are mostly
nominal. On the Mersey, a small sailing vessel has
been chartered at £16 per ton for coal to Iceland.

Mr. Lloyd George informed the House of Commons
that the levy on industries would include another
50,000 from the coal mines, in addition to the 50,000
now being taken. He said the Government was
convinced that these men could be spared without
endangering the essential output of coal for national
industries.

. The Ministry of Munitions has appointed a com-
mittee to enquire into certain matters relating to the
production of fuel oil from home sources. The
Marquis of Crewe is the chairman.

The scheme for allocation of Welsh coal orders has
been postponed, and is now dated to come into opera-
tion on April 15.

A meeting of the members of the North of
England Institute of Alining and Mechanical
Engineers will be held to-morrow (Saturday) in the
Wood Memorial Hall, Newcastle, commencing at
2 p.m. The following papers will be open for discus-
sion:—“The Flow of Water in Syphons,” by Mr.
M. Halliday; “Notes on the Uniflow Steam Engine,”
by Mr. G. G. T. Poole; “A System of Storing and
Filling Small Coal, with Remarks upon the Preven-
tion of Spontaneous Heating in Coal Heaps,” by Air.
J. Alorison ; and “The Strength of Pit Props,” by
Air. F. L. Booth. A paper on “ Systems of Con-
veyor Face Working,” by Mr. F. C. Lee, will be
submitted.

A paper on “The ‘Bold’ Timber Tram,” by Mr.
J. G. Thompson, will be read at a meeting of the
Manchester Geological and Mining Society, 5, John
Dalton-street, Manchester, on April 16, commencing
at 4 p.m. The papers open for discussion are “ The
Thin Mine Problem,” by Mr. H. O. Dixon; “The
Geology of Manchester, as Revealed by Borings,”
by Dr. G. Hickling; “Coal Washing: a Scientific
Study,” by Mr. T. J. Drakeley, and “Wastes, Shales,
Lower Grades of Small Coal • their Nature, Recovery
and Use for Oil and Power Purposes,” by Mr. J.
Drummond Paton.

Mr. G. H. D. Cole, secretary of the Research
Department of the Fabian Society, will address
representatives of Northumberland miners’ lodges
in the Burt Hall, Newcastle, on Saturday afternoon,
April 20, on “The Future Ownership and Control
of Industry, with Special Reference to Coal Mining.”
