Joint Editors— J. V. ELSDEN, D.Sc. (Lond.), F.G.S. HUBEBT GBEENWELL, F.S.S., Assoc.M.I.M.E. (Ai present on Active Service}. LONDON, FRIDAY, APRIL 20, 1917. The London coal market continues exceedingly short of supplies. Seaborne qualities have maintained a good tonnage, but all railborne coals are scarce. Many of the London depots are bare. The prompt market on the Tyne and Wear is dull, but for May loading all coals are in strong demand, and prices are maintained. Great pressure is experienced in Lancashire and Yorkshire for house coal, despite the fact that the season is well advanced. Transport arrangements still present a constant difficulty. A slight stiffening in the market is evident in Cardiff, but large anthracite inclines to be weaker in Llanelly, owing to the offerings exceeding demand. Practically no change has occurred in Scotland, where a certain amount of idle time is attributable to deficient tonnage. Supplies of tonnage are scarce on the North-east coast, and chartering business is idle. Hates are firmly maintained. Apparently, the neutrals have not responded to the increased terms. .Fancy figures are quoted in Yorkshire for coastwise trade. Free tonnage is practically unobtainable in Cardiff.
