The London coal trade during the week has been seriously hampered by the holiday and the snow. House and steam coals are scarce, and small nuts practically unobtainable. Fortunately, the seaborne market has been well supplied. A dull tone in the coal markets is still reported. No change in the f.o.b. quotations for prompt ship- ment has occurred on the Tyne and Wear, and the position in Lancashire and Yorkshire appears to be unvaried, with the Exception of anticipations based on the new freight scale. Reports from the Midlands are confined to familiar facts. Diminished stocks on the sidings, and a more promising outlook have encouraged colliery salesmen in Cardiff to hold for higher prices. Large anthracite, in Llanelly, is weak for prompt shipment. Export business is quieter in Western Scotland, and collieries in the Lothians would be in a difficulty without the assistance of Admiralty orders. A new schedule of freights for neutral boats has been issued. The limitation rates for French Mediterranean and Italian ports, raised some time ago, are unaltered. The Controller of Coal Mines has intimated to the National Gas Council that there will be no objection to gas companies renewing their contracts for the supply of coal for 12 months, provided clauses are put in the contracts to the effect that they can be cancelled if the Controller of Coal Mines decides that it is necessary to do so. At a conference in Wigan, the Lancashire and Cheshire coal owners and the representatives of the colliery workers agreed upon a scheme' of hours of employment under the Daylight Saving Act. The Northumberland Miners’ Association will hold the annual council meeting at Newcastle on May 19. The 63rd annual meeting of the Mining Associa- tion of Great Britain was held on Wednesday, April 4, at the' Savoy Hotel. The chair was taken by the president, Mr. Adam Nimmo. A report of the proceedings appears in another column. A meeting of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers will be held in the Wood Memorial Hall, Newcastle, to-morrow, April 14, commencing at 2 p.m. ’ Mr. E. E. Mairet’s paper on “The Economical Production and Utilisation of Power at Collieries,” and Mr. S. Tate’s paper,
