With such refuse it is able to generate steam as quickly as furnaces fitted with stationary bars, burning a higher-grade coal. The arrangement which admits of the furnace being hand-fired, and of the removal of ash without diminishing the output of steam during the operation, renders this furnace particularly suit- able for collieries and gas works desirous of utilising their pit rubbish and coke breeze as fuel.
