LONDON, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1916. _______________________ The London coal trade continues brisk. The depots had accumulated a little stock earlier in the winter, but it has rapidly disappeared. Hard steam and kitchener cobbles are difficult to obtain. Slacks have improved. The seaborne tonnage is well maintained. Prompt business in the Tyne and Wear market is described as “ desperate,” in consequence of shipping difficulties. Railway transport is adding to the problem. Export business in Lancashire appears to have improved, but, generally speaking, the market is quiet. Small nuts for steam purposes are eagerly enquired for. Prices are rather weaker in Yorkshire. In the Midlands the salient feature is the unsatisfied demand for house coal. Cardiff L. hardly settled down to the new consideration introduced by Govern- ment control. Large anthracite is easy, and machine- made qualities are in slow demand. The position in Scotland remains unsatisfactory, the only improve- ment—a slight one—being recorded in the Lothians.
