HUBERT GREENWELL, F.S.S., Assoc.M.I.M.E. (At present on Active Service). LONDON, FRIDAY, MARCH BL, 1916. The London coal trade continues unusually brisk, but the depots report a great shortage of fuel. Prices are at the maximum, but offerings are scarce. The tone of the Tyne and Wear prompt markets has again ruled firm, and values tend to increase; supplies of fuel remain very scarce. The very severe weather of the past week considerably dislocated business in Lancashire, Yorkshire, and Derbyshire, and further increased the demand for fuel. Supplies, however, continue to be. inadequate, and new orders, in many cases, are refused. At Cardiff, the market has again become unsettled, and prices irregular on account of the uncertain exporting situation. Owing to the recent gales several collieries in the district were laid idle for a few days. The Scottish coal trade continues brisk. The House of Lords has dismissed the appeal of the Crown against Foran and another in which the question raised was whether, under the Finance Act, the latter were bound by a return made on Form IV. in which no estimate was made as to the capital value of unmined minerals. A paper on “ Refractory Materials and Salty Coals” was read before the Coke Oven Managers’ Association on Saturday last, by Prof. J. Cobb. The Board of Trade have drawn public attention to the need for fuel economy at the present time. At a meeting of the North Staffordshire Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers, on Monday, Mr. W. Simons read a paper dealing with iron and steel for colliery work. The sixty-second annual meeting of the Mining Association of Great Britain was held yesterday at the Westminster Palace Hotel. Sir Francis, Brain presided in the absence of the president, the Right Hon. the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres. A report of the proceedings appears in another column. Lord Coleridge, the independent chairman of the Coal Conciliation Board for England and North Wales, has acceded to the men’s application, and given an advance of 5 per cent, on the existing rate of wages. The money value of the advance is equal to 4Jd. per day for coal hewers, and 2d. per day to boys and other workers. The advance granted by Lord Coleridge brings wages to 20 per cent, above the new standard, and to within 3J per cent, of the maximum under the new wage agreement. Besides
