THE COLLIERY GUARDIAN. 31 January 7, 1916. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ OUTPUT AND VALUE OF FUEL IN 1914.* The total value of the minerals raised during the year amounted to £145,863,032, a decrease of £14,249,635 as compared with 1913. The total output of coal was 265,664,393 tons, and the value, .£132,596,853, showing a decrease in nhe output of 21,766,080 tons, and in the value of £12,938,816 on the figures for 1913. The average price of coal was 9s. ll’79d. per ton in 1914, as compared with 10s. l’52d. in 1913. The quantity of coal exported, exclusive of coke and manufactured fuel, and of coal shipped for the use of steamers engaged in foreign trade was 59,039,880 tons. France received over 12^ million tons, Italy over 8J million tons, Germany over 5J million tons, Sweden over 4 J million tons, Russia over 3 million cons, Denmark over 3 million tons, Spain nearly 3 million tons, the Argentine over 2f million tons, Egypt over 2J million tons, Norway nearly 2^- million ions, and the Netherlands nearly million tons. Adding the 3,418,394 tons exported in the form of coke and manu- factured fuel, and the 18,535,616 tons shipped for the use of British and foreign steamers engaged in foreign trade, the total quantity of coal which left the country was 80,993,890 tons, as against 98,338,104 tons in 1913. The amount of coal remaining for home consumption was 184,670,503 tons, or 3’977 tons per head of the population; 36,289,010 tons were used in the manu- facture of coke and briquettes, and 18,381,106 tons in the blast furnaces for the manufacture of pig iron, as against 39,560,489 tons and 21,223,607 tons respectively in the previous year. During the past 42 years (1873-1914) the total value of the' mineral raised amounts to £3,664,980,074, and of this sum coal accounts for £3,083,191,238, or 84’1 per cent; 8,206,243,000 tons of coal have been raised in that period; and of this amount 2,012,796,000 tons, or more than 24| per cent, of the total production, have been shipped abroad as exports in the form of coal, coke, and manufactured fuel, and as coal used for steamers engaged in foreign trade. The following are the percentages of output shipped abroad in each quinquennial period from 1873 to 1912, and the percentage for the years 1913 and 1914 :—1873- 1877, 13’8 per cent.; 1878-1882, 16’1; 1883-1887, 19’0; 1888-1892, 21’2; 1893-1897, 23’0; 1898-1902, 25’7; 1903- 1907, 29’5; 1908-1912, 32’4; 1913, 34’2; and 1914, 30’5 per cent. Particulars relating to the manufacture of coke and briquettes are given; 18,970,925 tons of coke were obtained in 1914, valued at £13,252,526; 16,975 coking ovens were in use during the year; 1,840,465 tons of briquettes were produced, valued at £1,567,474. Of the other non-metallic minerals, the combined values of the output of clay and shale, igneous rocks, limestone, oil shale, salt, sandstone, and slate for.19.14 amount to over 7| millions sterling. Of the metallic minerals raised in the United Kingdom, iron ore is by far the most important. During the year the output of ores of this metal was 14,867,582 tons, valued at £3,921,683. The ore yielded 4,786,090 tons of iron, or more than half of the total quantity of pig iron made in this country. Chief Inspector of Mines. Of the 265,664,393 tons of coal produced during the year 1914, the following amount was exported :—Coal, as such, 59,039,880 tons; coal, equivalent of 1,182,848 tons of coke exported, 1,971,413 tons; coal contained in 1,607,757 tons of manufactured fuel exported, 1,446,981 tons; coal shipped for use of steamers engaged in foreign trade, .18,535,616 tons—total, 80,993,890 tons; leaving 184,670,503 tons of coal available for home consumption, or 3-977 tons per head of the population of the United Kingdom. The mean price of seaborne coal in the London market during the year was 21s. per ton. Returns of production of coke were received from 144 colliery owners, comprising 190 separate works, 1,500 gas companies, and 21 other owners of coke ovens com- prising 21 works. The counties of Durham and York furnished 64 per cent, of the total quantity of coke made at coking ovens, and 63 per cent, of the total number of ovens were worked in those counties. Of the 211 works (other than gas works) where coking plant is in use, by-products were recovered in 1914 at 103. Returns as to the manufacture of briquettes were obtained from all firms known to be engaged in the industry, South Wales being by far the largest con- tributor in this respect. Very fine slack wdiich would otherwise be of little value commercially is used in making briquettes. The following table shows the quantity and value of briquettes produced and the amount, of coal used in the manufacture thereof at works in the during 1914.
