The London coal trade is in a peculiar position. The demand is unusually strong, and there are fairly good quantities at the depots, but the difficulty of cartage renders it impossible to get supplies to the householders. Prices are unchanged. The Tyne and Wear markets are exceptionally strong, coal for prompt shipment being unobtainable, with the result that values have advanced. Business at the Lancashire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire markets has been of a more or less nominal character; the demand is very heavy, but all coal produced is already earmarked. The Scottish coal trade is very active, and values firm. Shortage of tonnage again dominates the Cardiff situation, and prices vary according to individual circumstances. Before a nleeting of the Manchester Geological and Mining Society on Tuesday, Mr. H. Green read a paper dealing with the principles of visual mine signalling.
