The colder weather, in addition to the near approach of the winter prices, has stimulated the house coal market. Steam coals and small nuts are more plentiful, but all prices are firm. Very little 11 free” coal is offering, and strong pressure is adopted to secure the full contract quantities. Slacks are down. Public prices have advanced Is. during the week in all the southern depots to meet the difference in the railway rates. No change in the ordinary prices from October 1. Affairs in the outward freight market have been unsettled during the past week, rates moving down- wards at the beginning and rising again at the close. The influence of licence difficulties is still very much felt at the Tyne and Wear markets, but a better tone generally prevails in the prompt markets, and prices are fully maintained. Tonnage for some time past has been on the short side, and this has now been accentuated by the withdrawal of Greek vessels. Household sorts in Lancashire have improved in demand, owing to the colder weather, but the owners have decided not . to increase quotations. Prices generally rule firm in Derbyshire, where the changed weather also finds a reflection in the demand for house coals. A considerably improved demand is noticed throughout Yorkshire for the same reason; little surplus coal is on offer. The state of the Cardiff coal trade is even more difficult than before and prices show great variation. The tonnage question has created a serious position,
