Joint Editors— J. V. ELSDEN, D.Sc. (Lond.), F.G.S. HUBERT GREENWELL, F.S.S., Assoc.M.I.M.E. LONDON, FRIDAY, AUGUST 20, 1915. The London coal trade is still in an unsettled state as regards pit prices. The demand for house coal is firm, especially for the Derby brights quality. The depot trade is slower, and loaded wagons are accumu- lating at many of the large depots. Collieries have very little available coal to sell beyond the monthly contract quantities. Coke is weak. Considerable uncertainty is everywhere manifested as to the legal prices at which coal can be offered. Pronounced scarcity of tonnage and licence restric- tions were responsible for a considerable increase in freight rates at Bristol Channel ports during the early part of the week. On the north-east coast also business was only of a scrappy nature, owners of vessels holding back for higher figures. For the reasons stated, the Tyne and Wear markets were on the quiet side, prompt business showing very little activity. The Derbyshire position remains steady, orders being plentiful, but without any great pressure being felt. The trade in household coal in Lancashire appears to have reached its lowest level, however, steam coal and shipping coal are fairly brisk. The coal trade of West Yorkshire has been fairly satis- factory, though the London business has been only moderate. Little new business has been introduced into the South Yorkshire market owing to a very small proportion of the output being available in view of the fact that contract supplies are of a heavy description. Buyers still appear to be hesitating over the position created by the Prices Limitation Act, but on the other hand sellers do not appear anxious to sell. The condition of affairs at Cardiff has been far from satisfactory, dearth of tonnage and export restrictions standing in the way of good business. Chartering has been on a very moderate scale, and stocks are accumulating— so much so that there is just a possibility of some collieries stopping through the need of wagons. Prices are really a matter of arrangement. The Scottish coal trade is in a satisfactory condition, and values show a tendency to advance.
