Joint Editors— J. V. ELSDEN, D.Sc. (Lond.), F.G.S. HUBERT GREENWELL, F.S.S., Assoc.M.I.M.E. LONDON, FRIDAY, JULY 2, 1915. The London coal market continues brisk. The shipping department is somewhat easier, and the demand is not so strong. The household market is strong. New contracts begin with a distinct advance of 5s. per ton. Railway companies are bringing forward supplies with greater celerity. No change yet in public prices. During the past week licence restrictions have eased somewhat, but, notwithstanding, export trade has been very difficult to transact and prices in some cases have lost their firmness. As regards the inland trade, buyers continue to hesitate in fixing up new contracts, in anticipation of Government, inter- ference on the price question. Forward business on the Tyne and Wear has been extremely quiet, but the tone of the prompt markets has slightly improved. In Lancashire, stacks of household fuel are being accumulated, owing to slackening in demand ; prices, however, remain firm. Tra*de in Derbyshire is generally steady, there being a good all round demand with prices firm. Business in Yorkshire has been far from smooth, but several contracts at good prices have been booked. Very little business has been done on the Cardiff market, forward contracts being impossible whilst labour clouds hang over- head. Trade in Scotland continues quiet. Marble statues of the two founders of the Derby- shire Association—the late Mr. James Haslam, M.P., and Mr. W. E. Harvey, M.P.—were unveiled at Chesterfield on Saturday last. A statement has been issued by the South Wales Coal Owners’ Association of an investigation of their books for 1914. This shows how misleading and exaggerated recent reports regarding colliery profits have been. The several conferences between the Minister of Munitions and the Miners’ Federation of Great Britain, with the idea of inducing the latter to accept compulsory arbitration of labour disputes, as under the Munitions of War Bill, have, so far, proved un- successful. A conference representing the coal mining industry will be held shortly to receive the Government views regarding the output question. Sir John Simon will preside, and the meeting will be addressed by Mr. Lloyd George, Mr. Pease and Mr. Smillie. Twelve men were killed and seven others injured in a cage accident which occurred at the Bentinck l Colliery, Notts, on Wednesday.
