Joint Editors— J. V. ELSDEN, D.Sc. (Loud.), F.G.S. HUBEBT GREENWELL, F.S.S., Assoc.M.I.M.E. LONDON, FRIDAY, JUNE 18, .915. _________ The London coal trade for the past week has been unusually brisk. The depot trade is slow, but merchants report. a t heavy list of orders from the general public. If anything, the export licence difficulty has been intensified during the week, and shipments thus further curtailed. During the early part of the week there was an excess of tonnage, and rates dropped accordingly, but towards the latter end a change in the opposite direction was noticeable. On the Tyne and Wear business has been very limited, and prices less firm. For the time of the year the household trade of Lancashire is fairly brisk, and prices maintain their strength. Satisfactory conditions prevail in Derbyshire, and prices show an upward trend. The Yorkshire markets cannot be called specially active, and the hestitating attitude of the buyers has produced a slightly easier tendency in prices. At Cardiff the prices of cheaper grades have been reduced, there being little business outside Admiralty and Allies’ requirements. A peculiar state of affairs —since the commencement of this war—viz., ability to meet demands despite reduced output, is to; be found in the west of Scotland, where trade is quiet. The active condition of the eastern market continues.
