Owing to our Tonnage supplies during the past week have greatly improved, owing principally to the official restriction of exports to neutral countries. As a result freight rates have fallen. Contracts for gas coal for inland works, which expire at the end of the present month, are being steadily renewed, though in not a few cases gas concerns are holding back in anticipation of Government action to regulate advances. On the Tyne and Wear markets the export embargo has served to materially curtail shipments ; the prompt markets have been very quiet, and prices considerably, less. House coal enquiries in Derbyshire have increased, and trade has been quite brisk, the demand for manufacturing fuel being naturally high. The improvement in the demand for house coal has not been experienced in Lancashire, the opposite being the case; neverthe- less, prices remain firm. Business on the whole, has been brisk in Yorkshire, but the output is still declining owing to enlistments. Much inconvenience and loss have been suffered at Cardiff by the restric- tion upon exports, and business has been difficult to transact; prices show little alteration. A slight improvement is noticeable in the eastern markets of Scotland, but trade in the west remains quiet. The Departmental Committee which, under the chairmanship of Sir Richard Redmayne, has been enquiring into the condition of the coalmining industry with a view to promoting organisation of work in order to recover the necessary output of coal during the war, has now issued its report. A meeting of the Mining Institute of Scotland will be held at Edinburgh to-morrow (Saturday). Mr. Henry Briggs will read a paper dealing with resident and non-resident rescue brigade systems, and Mr. Michael McCormick will contribute a paper entitled “An Auxiliary and Outfit for Attachment to Self- contained Bescue Apparatus.” The Hackney Borough Council propose to invite representatives' of all metropolitan boroughs to a
