The London coal trade during the past week has shown a good deal of activity, especially in the house coal market. The depot trade is weak, but merchants are buying freely for stock purposes. The renewals also for monthly contract quantities during the coming year have been proceeding briskly. Contract prices are all 5s. higher than last year. The seaborne trade is affected by the shortage of river craft. Freight rates have again commenced to advance in consequence of an improvement in the outward trade. The Tyne and Wear markets are lamenting the restriction on coal exports, and it would appear that so far there has been little relaxation in the matter of granting licences. As a result, business has been of a dull nature. The Lanca- shire house coal demand is now quietening down, but the output is easily disposed of. Trade in Derbyshire is quietly steady, and prices exhibit a tendency to harden. On the Yorkshire market, the
